St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, a hot place in January and now I don't have to guess, a crazy hot place in July. It was the "off season" and there were no cruse ships in port which meant the Island was more than half closed. It's okay because outside of the resorts, like many places in "paradise" it's kind of a shit hole. Another tourist trap, this time it encompasses the entire island. Not to say there are not any cool things to do there, there are. But it does not seem like the locals get paid very well. Except of course for the taxi drivers, who have a running scam on the Island, $12.00 to go anywhere. 2 feet or 2 miles..... if the island is even that big. It's too hot to walk and too dangerous to venture into town at night without a cab driver. Once you get into town it's all T-shirts and jewelry, magnets and pirate crap, oh and fishing trips and boat rides. Even the night clubs are lame touristy spots like The Fat Turtle
and assorted other non creative names.
However, the Marriott was very nice sporting views of the island from afar on it's own little corner which is the best place to see the island from. Unless you want to be solicited by a one armed Rasta woman with no teeth pushing business cards for a jewelery store, so obviously being used to strike pity into customers so they take a card that it is scary and sad at the same time. So if you like that sort of thing, by all means go into town. No need however as the Marriott has it's own beach and it's own 24 hour pool with a swim up bar. What the hell else do you need?
The wedding, although slightly warm, was beautiful and both John and Melissa looked great. For some reason the DJ had a thing for Michael Jackson and played about 5 songs throughout the night, but other than that he was pretty decent. Great setting and good folks coupled with lots of free booze with swimming after makes a good wedding. I am going to recover now. Oh, mind Poolzilla, will you?
